Joseph’s
Sightline Story
I have multiple disabilities which makes life difficult for me. Alongside my sight loss I am also experiencing hearing loss so communicating with people is becoming more of a challenge all the time.
I live in sheltered housing on my own though am hoping to move soon to access more support. I do find it difficult meeting people with similar interests and maintaining friendships so when I found Sightline I thought it offered the perfect solution being telephone-based.
I am 47 and was medically retired from my job. I was very depressed when I first started speaking to Jack last year. He didn’t judge; just listened and offered support and kindness. His calls proved invaluable for me and, as it turns out, the best medicine I could get.
Living with varying and complex disabilities I felt desperate at times; so anxious about life but Jack brought some much-needed relief into my days. He has 2 dogs who always get a mention in our calls; they sound like great characters!
Jack and I also love to chat about technology. Were always discussing the latest apps for our phones that make them more accessible.
We spend a lot of time talking about how we’ve set up new devices we have bought. There’s always some hints and tips to share with each other. For anyone with sight loss, I’d definitely recommend a listen to Tech Talk over on RNIB Connect Radio. Tech Talk looks at exciting new developments, explores mainstream and specialist technologies and gives tips and pointers about how to make the best use of the technology you already know and love.
My favourite befriending memory so far? The way Jack makes me laugh and bringing the feeling like I have something enjoyable in my life.
I know I am going to be worried when the time comes for me to move house; Jack is going to be a great support to me. Even though he isn’t there in person, his support over the phone makes me feel more positive about myself and in my own abilities when faced with lots of different situations; he’s a star!
